The Trial of John T. Scopes

A Primary Source Account

Great Trials of the Twentieth Century

As the effects of a cultural upheaval were felt in 1920's America, the story of the Scopes Monkey Trial pitted religion against science. During the summer of 1925, John Scopes, a high school teacher, was charged with illegally teaching the theory of evolution. As two famous lawyers--Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan--went against each other, the fate of the defendant paled in comparison to the feelings the trial uncovered.
