Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in New York. In 1828, she became a free woman when the state emancipated slaves. In 1843, she fought against slavery and toured the nation speaking on behalf of the abolitionist movement and women's rights. President Abraham Lincoln honored her work in raising money for black volunteer regiments during the Civil War.
