Landscape with Moving Figures

A Decade on Dance

Contemporary Discourse on Movement and Dance

In Landscape with Moving Figures, Ms. Jacobs reflects on the art form during the ten-year period from 1994-2004 when dancers, choreographers and dance lovers were challenged by AIDS and the loss of the last of the founding giants of American dance. Grounded by her vast knowledge of the form and guided by her own sensitive gifts of perception, Ms. Jacobs ponders the very purpose of the art as she encounters it in landmark performances of the decade. She describes her multi-layered experiences watching performances by Bill T. Jones, New York City Ballet, Baryshnikov's White Oak Project, the Royal Ballet, Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp and others.

Book Review--
"Ms. Jacobs has a knack for making fine phrases, and she has great powers of description. unusual verve. Her provocative collection of essays is both a diary of a turbulent decade in dance and an articulation of her own sharply honed critical perspective."
- The New York Sun, Dec. 26, 2006

Book Review--
"Laura Jacobs's LANDSCAPE WITH MOVING FIGURES tells us more about dancing, from the classics to the moderns, than any other book within recent memory...From the Kirov to Mark Morris she describes dance so that it leaps off the page back into our memories...You must read this book not only to get a perspective on the past but to learn how to look at the stage today and really see."
