Fort Sumter

The Confederate soldiers who fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861, launched the American Civil War. Students will be introduced to the pentagon-shaped fort through the history of the defense of Charleston Harbor and the exciting climax, of the harbor battle between Union and Confederate ironclad ships in 1863. Cared for today by the National Park Service, Fort Sumter National Monument continues to remind students about the war that tore apart the United States.
