Cottonmouths

These large pit vipers live near swamps, lakes, rivers, and shallow pools. This is the reason they are also called water moccasins. Cottonmouths open their white, cotton-colored mouths whenever they wish to frighten enemies. Students will learn about this fish-eating snake's senses and how it locates prey or predators with them. They will also learn about the cottonmouth's hemotoxic venom, which is used to make antivenin for treating snakebites.
